Kolkata, April 21: In the lead-up to the West Bengal assembly elections, Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed a large gathering in Kulthi on Tuesday. He assured the crowd that if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) comes to power, a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented across Bengal.
Shah emphasized that with a BJP government, no one would be allowed to have four marriages. He pointed out that the practice of multiple marriages is prevalent and vowed to put an end to it. Following his rally, the people of Kulthi echoed the call for the UCC’s implementation in the state.
Ajay Kumar Poddar, the BJP candidate from Kulthi, stated that there is a wave of change in the area. He noted that the people are disillusioned with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) after 15 years of governance under Mamata Banerjee, which he claims has turned Bengal into a graveyard. Unemployment is rising, and 6,642 factories have shut down. He asserted that Bengal, once known as India’s ‘generator,’ is now in dire straits, but under a BJP government, Kulthi will regain its former glory.
Poddar further criticized Banerjee, claiming she is a masterful playwright who writes and acts in her own political drama. He accused her of double standards, saying that while Bangladeshi outsiders are welcomed, Indian citizens are treated as outsiders in their own land.
He reiterated that the UCC is a demand of the people of Bengal and vowed that India will not be allowed to deteriorate.
Local resident Vikas Kumar Sahu expressed optimism after Shah’s visit, stating that the BJP’s governance would bring development and that UCC should be implemented in Bengal.
Sumitra Devi added that a BJP government is necessary to ensure progress, citing corruption and rising atrocities against women under the current administration.
