Chennai, April 21: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge addressed a rally in Velachery, Tamil Nadu, expressing confidence that the Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) will secure victory in the upcoming assembly elections.
Kharge campaigned in support of Congress candidate JMH Hasan Maulana in the Velachery constituency. The party is contesting 28 seats in alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) for the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections.
The Secular Progressive Alliance aims to retain power against the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Voting is scheduled for April 23, with counting set for May 4.
Hasan Maulana welcomed the rally addressed by Kharge, stating it would energize party workers and candidates across the state. He expressed confidence in his victory, citing numerous development projects he has undertaken and the positive feedback from constituents.
Congress leader K.V. Thangakabaloo also expressed optimism about the alliance’s prospects, noting significant public support during the campaign. He stated that the SPA is poised for a substantial victory across Tamil Nadu. After campaigning for 15 days, he observed overwhelming support for the alliance. He believes that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s government will return to power, ensuring continued development in Tamil Nadu.
Thangakabaloo mentioned that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has visited Tamil Nadu, and the Chief Minister is actively campaigning statewide. He highlighted the enthusiasm surrounding their campaign efforts, asserting that the alliance is destined to win.
He also discussed the collaboration between Rahul Gandhi and Chief Minister Stalin, describing it as a robust political partnership. Although they have not campaigned together extensively in different districts, Gandhi praised Stalin and his administration during his visit to Tamil Nadu.
Additionally, Thangakabaloo criticized the recent income tax raid at the residence of state Congress unit president K. Selvapereunthagai, labeling it politically motivated. He remarked that BJP leaders may make various claims or actions, but such tactics will not deter the Tamil Nadu Congress leadership.
