Murshidabad, April 21: In the lead-up to the West Bengal assembly elections, Congress leader Sachin Pilot held a roadshow on Tuesday in support of party candidate Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
Speaking in Murshidabad, Pilot emphasized that this election represents a quest for change. He noted that the public is frustrated with both the state and central governments and is actively seeking alternatives. The Congress party has traditionally held a strong presence in the region, and Pilot believes that significant change is on the horizon.
He pointed out that the government has been given multiple chances—three terms for the state government and three for the central government. Despite these opportunities, West Bengal remains underdeveloped, grappling with unemployment and poverty. Once a leader in progress, the state has fallen behind, prompting citizens to seek new options. Under Congress rule, Bengal experienced consistent development, with a focus on industry, investment, and infrastructure. “We are fighting to win this election. Our candidates are performing well, and our five guarantees resonate with the public. I am confident that the results will favor Congress,” he stated.
Pilot also criticized the BJP government, accusing it of misleading the public regarding women’s reservation. He questioned why the bill, passed three years ago, has yet to be implemented. “Now, they are using the excuse of delimitation to manipulate seat allocations, but the public has seen through this,” he asserted. He highlighted that when the bill was passed, it received unanimous support in Parliament. “Why the delay for three years? Today, Priyanka Gandhi has also stated that if the central government brings the bill now, the entire opposition is ready to allocate one-third of the seats to women in the current Lok Sabha. We stand with them. However, the BJP seems more interested in increasing seats for political gain while confusing the public under the guise of women’s rights. This will no longer work,” he declared.
He further accused the BJP of fabricating narratives around women’s safety in Bengal, calling it a blatant lie. “Three years ago, the entire Parliament supported the women’s reservation bill. Now, they are exploiting women’s issues to execute their delimitation agenda. Sonia Gandhi and Dr. Manmohan Singh first introduced this bill. The BJP supported it in the Rajya Sabha but opposed it in the Lok Sabha. The BJP’s influence in Bengal is waning,” he concluded.
