Konkona Sen Sharma Calls Sensationalism an Easy Reward

Mumbai, March 4: National Award-winning actress Konkona Sen Sharma has labeled sensationalism as “an easy reward.” During the promotion of her recently released streaming film “Accused,” she emphasized that the film steers clear of sensationalism.

In “Accused,” Konkona stars alongside Pratibha Ranta in leading roles. The film tells the story of a woman accused of sexual harassment by a victim. Konkona explained, “Sensationalism is like an easy reward. It comes quickly and is a simple fix. However, we are not looking at it that way. We see ‘Accused’ as a film rich in nuances and depth. It moves away from simple answers, meaning it has complexity.”

She further elaborated, “The film ‘Accused’ is essentially an exploration of power and human relationships. What happens when such allegations arise in a relationship? How does the relationship break down? How does it reconnect? And what biases do we hold, positive or negative, towards a woman in power? How do these biases affect our judgment? The film delves deeply into these questions.”

Released on Netflix on February 27, “Accused” narrates the story of a woman facing allegations of workplace sexual harassment. Konkona mentioned that the script challenges common perceptions. She stated, “We often see women as victims or survivors, rarely as perpetrators. While statistics show that crimes are mostly committed by men, women can also be offenders, and that happens too.”

Konkona highlighted that the film’s most intriguing aspect is its focus on untold stories that are usually overlooked. It showcases the power dynamics among women in the workplace, the power play in relationships between two women, and the significant age difference involved. It presents a narrative that reveals the other side of the coin, where both the accused and the victim are women. The age gap, nature of the job, and complexity of the relationship all bring our biases to the forefront.
