Kolkata Enhances Hotel Surveillance Ahead of Assembly Elections

Kolkata, April 26: Ahead of the second phase of assembly elections scheduled for April 29, Kolkata Police have implemented stringent measures to bolster security in the city.

This time, Lalbazar, the police headquarters, has mandated that all hotels and lodges, big and small, be closely monitored. Authorities are emphasizing the collection of detailed information about guests, including their origins, reasons for visiting, and duration of stay.

According to police reports, Commissioner of Kolkata Police, Ajay Nand, has instructed every police station to keep a vigilant eye on all hotels, guest houses, and lodges in their respective areas. Special attention is being given to the activities of visitors from outside the city in the lead-up to the elections.

Hotel officials have been directed to verify the valid identification of each guest and share that information with the local police station.

A senior officer from Lalbazar stated, “The number of visitors from outside increases during elections. This measure is taken to ensure that no individual engages in any form of unrest or illegal activities during this period.”

Police officers from various stations are already visiting different areas to meet hotel owners and inform them about the new regulations. The police have also clarified that not only large hotels but also small lodges and budget guest houses are under scrutiny, as these locations sometimes show laxity in identity checks.

Additionally, night checkpoints, mobile patrols, and extra police personnel have been deployed at key locations. Surveillance has been intensified at railway stations, bus terminals, and entry points into the city.

Officers are now directly involved in nighttime checkpoint operations. Two IPS officers have been assigned to each major checkpoint to ensure rigorous monitoring and eliminate any negligence.
