KMC Requests Elevation Copy for Building Linked to Abhishek Banerjee

Kolkata, May 27: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has requested an elevation copy for a building registered under a company associated with Abhishek Banerjee, the General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress and Member of Parliament. This request is part of KMC’s response to a prior notice regarding the property located on Harish Mukherjee Road in South Kolkata.

The building, situated at 188A Harish Mukherjee Road, is near the residence of former Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee. It is registered under the name of a corporate entity called Leaps and Bounds Private Limited, but it has been used as Abhishek Banerjee’s residence. The building is named “Shantiniketan.”

KMC officials clarified that merely responding to the notice will not suffice. The elevation copy of the building must be attached to the response to substantiate the claims. They emphasized that any modifications or additions made to the original structure must be clearly detailed in the elevation copy.

An “elevation copy” typically refers to architectural elevation drawings used in construction. These are 2D, scaled orthographic projections that depict a structure in 3D, showcasing features such as walls, roofs, doors, windows, and exterior materials from a specific perspective.

KMC has sent notices regarding 17 properties owned or co-owned by Abhishek Banerjee. Sources indicate that, like “Shantiniketan,” elevation copies will also need to be provided for other properties in response to the KMC notices.

It has been reported that when obtaining construction design approval, a photograph or drawing of the construction site, along with details of the work being done, must be submitted with the application, as mandated by the KMC Building Rules, 2009.

One copy of the documents is retained by the Building Department, while the other remains with the applicant. This design is created on a specific type of blue paper. This copy serves as one of the most crucial means for KMC to gather information about illegal constructions in any area under its jurisdiction.

Since the Trinamool Congress government, led by Mamata Banerjee, came to power in West Bengal in 2011, the CPI(M), Congress, and BJP have vocally criticized the registration of numerous properties under the names of various members of the Banerjee family. However, Mamata Banerjee dismissed these allegations at the time, labeling them as attempts by the opposition to defame her.
