New Delhi, May 8: The suspense surrounding Kerala’s next Chief Minister deepens as the Congress leadership enters a decisive phase of discussions. This development follows the submission of a detailed report by AICC observers to party president Mallikarjun Kharge in New Delhi on Friday.
Observers Ajay Maken and Mukul Wasnik presented their findings after extensive discussions with newly elected legislators and senior leaders in Kerala.
According to reports, the observers informed the high command that the political situation in the state remains complex, with intense lobbying and factional pressures continuing until the final stages. An announcement regarding the new Chief Minister is expected by Sunday.
It is believed that the report assesses three critical factors: the support for various candidates among the legislators, the stance of alliance partners, and the current public sentiment.
Ajay Maken confirmed that discussions on the report have commenced and emphasized that leadership will not unnecessarily delay the final decision.
As the high command began its deliberations, a new controversy erupted in the media regarding leaked images and lists claiming to reveal the support status of Congress legislators during consultations.
The leaked images sparked a heated political debate, with different groups attempting to showcase momentum for their respective candidates. However, Mukul Wasnik categorically denied the authenticity of the circulated documents.
He clarified that the images being shared do not represent the official assessment provided to the Congress president. According to Wasnik, the publicly available materials were merely images of papers held by the observers, not the actual consultation results.
This controversy intensified when Neelakandan, the elected MLA from Uduma, complained that his views were misrepresented in the leaked list. He stated that he had clearly expressed his opinions during the consultation and demanded verification of the facts. This complaint has raised doubts about the credibility of the circulated list within the party.
At the center of this power struggle are K.C. Venugopal, V.D. Satheesan, and Ramesh Chennithala, all of whom are strong contenders for the Chief Minister position. Meanwhile, opposition factions have intensified efforts to rally their supporters and sway public opinion in their favor through social media campaigns. Competition among different factions for legislative support is also heating up.
Supporters of Venugopal claim he has backing from 48 legislators, while Satheesan and Chennithala’s supporters assert they have support from 35 and 23 legislators, respectively. Previously, the Congress legislative party unanimously passed a resolution granting Kharge the authority to make the final decision on the Chief Minister’s name.
Amid fears that this leadership struggle could deepen divisions within the party, indications suggest that the high command is considering a compromise formula to appease opposing factions. Discussions may include creating the position of Deputy Chief Minister and distributing key ministries, although no final agreement has been reached yet.
The next significant development is anticipated after discussions between Rahul Gandhi and Kerala leaders on Saturday in New Delhi. Participants are expected to include V.D. Satheesan, Ramesh Chennithala, and KPCC president Sanny Joseph, while Venugopal is already in the national capital.
Before announcing the final decision, Rahul Gandhi may meet with each of the contenders separately. Congress leaders assert that these extensive discussions reflect internal democracy rather than any factional rift within the party.
Sandeep Warrior, the newly elected MLA from Trikaripur, described this entire process as evidence of the democratic culture within Congress. He argues that the party actively seeks the opinions of its elected representatives before making significant decisions.
As tensions rise and the lobbying phase reaches its climax, the Congress leadership faces a delicate challenge: balancing the ambitions of various leaders while ensuring unity within the party. By Sunday, it is expected that Kerala will finally learn who will lead the new state government.
