Thiruvananthapuram, February 21: The Kerala Police’s special branch has issued an alert in response to potential political tensions in the state. This warning follows a protest by Youth Congress workers, who paid tribute at the residence of State Health Minister Veena George.
The ruling CPI-M led Left Democratic Front (LDF) has reacted sharply to this action. According to intelligence reports, CPI(M) may organize protests against the opposition leader VD Satheesan in response. The alert indicates that Satheesan’s ongoing “Puthuyuga Yatra” could be targeted. Protesters might attempt to gather near sites along the yatra route, displaying black flags.
The police alert also mentions the likelihood of protests outside Satheesan’s official residence, his private home in Paravur, and his legislative office. It is anticipated that CPI(M) activists, along with members of its allied organizations, the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and the Students Federation of India (SFI), may participate in these demonstrations.
To maintain law and order during the opposition leader’s yatra, police officials have been instructed to enhance preventive security measures and maintain strict surveillance during public events and accommodations.
In response to the situation, VD Satheesan accused the government of attempting to intimidate the opposition through orchestrated protests. He stated that democratic protests are a legitimate right, but any efforts to disrupt public gatherings or incite violence will be opposed politically and legally.
Satheesan clarified that the Youth Congress’s protest was symbolic and criticized the ruling party for unnecessarily escalating the issue to divert attention from governance-related matters. He affirmed that his “Puthuyuga Yatra” will continue as scheduled, undeterred by threats or protests involving black flags.
With the assembly elections approaching, security agencies are closely monitoring the escalating political tensions between the ruling coalition and the opposition. Increased police deployment is expected along the yatra route and sensitive locations in the coming days to maintain public order and prevent any untoward incidents.
