London, July 15: Keir Starmer addressed the House of Commons for the final time as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He expressed pride in leaving the country in a better state than when he took office.
During the parliamentary question session, Labour MP and close ally Carolyn Harris noted, “When Starmer took over the party leadership, few believed he could bring about necessary change. Today, thanks to his leadership, children are growing up in a more just Britain, and the country stands strong on the global stage.”
Harris highlighted Starmer’s consistent grace and courage throughout his tenure. In response, Starmer thanked her, stating, “This will be my last response from the dispatch box.”
He acknowledged, “Every Prime Minister knows that one day they must hand over this responsibility. That day has now come for me.” Starmer declared it the end of his political journey, stating, “In six years, we have traveled from the historic defeat in 2019 to a historic victory in 2024. After two years in government, I am leaving the country in a better position. I take pride in all our achievements.”
He expressed gratitude to the Speaker of Parliament, staff, and those working in his constituency offices for their support and hard work. He also thanked civil service officials, his political team, and party colleagues.
Starmer praised his team for their unwavering support and readiness to face every challenge. He expressed pride in all Labour MPs and assured his successor of his full support, wishing good health and a bright future to all members of Parliament.
In closing, Starmer reflected on the lives improved during his government, stating that those often unheard in society were his greatest inspiration for entering politics. He addressed his wife and children, saying, “I love you all. Goodbye.”
Keir Starmer announced his resignation as Prime Minister and Labour Party leader on June 22, 2026. Andy Burnham is seen as a strong contender for the position.
