Bengaluru, June 7: Karnataka’s Water Resources Minister Ramalinga Reddy has retracted his resignation following discussions with Congress leadership. Randeep Singh Surjewala, General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and in charge of Karnataka, announced this on Saturday, stating that Reddy will continue his role as a dedicated party member and minister.
Reddy had initially declared his resignation from the state cabinet on Friday, alleging that Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar failed to fulfill a promise regarding the Bengaluru Urban Development Department.
During a media interaction in Bengaluru, Surjewala noted that since Friday, the BJP and certain media outlets have speculated extensively about Reddy’s resignation. He emphasized that Ramalinga Reddy is a significant asset to the Congress party, having served since 1973.
Surjewala highlighted Reddy’s political experience, mentioning that he has been an MLA since 1989, winning eight assembly elections and holding various ministerial roles. His expertise and political acumen are deemed crucial for the party.
Following the resignation news, Surjewala, along with Chief Minister Shivakumar and party leaders B.K. Hariprasad and Siddaramaiah, engaged in discussions with Reddy. It became clear that misunderstandings had occurred, which were resolved through dialogue.
Surjewala confirmed, “Ramalinga Reddy has withdrawn his resignation and will remain in office. As a loyal party member, he will continue to fulfill his responsibilities.”
He criticized the BJP for attempting to exploit the situation politically, asserting that their plans have now been thwarted. Surjewala also took jabs at BJP leaders B.Y. Vijayendra and R. Ashok, stating they would repeatedly face defeat in the court of public opinion.
Additionally, Surjewala referenced the Congress government’s guarantee schemes, which have benefited millions. He noted that under the Shakti scheme, over 400 crore free bus rides have been provided, with plans to include nearly two crore students.
He claimed that 1.66 crore families in the state receive free electricity, while 4.49 crore beneficiaries are provided with 10 kilograms of free rice, along with scholarships of 3,000 and 1,500 rupees for millions of children through various programs.
Sources indicate that Congress leadership has also assured Reddy of an additional department, and he is expected to officially announce the withdrawal of his resignation soon.
