Haldwani, September 8 (Daily Kiran) : The police in Nainital have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against unidentified individuals in connection with a controversial ‘purification’ ritual that took place on August 8, following a program led by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge in Haldwani.
Prior to this, a ‘zero FIR’ was filed in Bengaluru regarding the same allegations. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manjunath TC stated that numerous complaints have been received from various organizations, individuals, and groups across the state. In Nainital district alone, over 19 applications have been submitted, all of which are currently under legal scrutiny. The FIR was lodged after a formal written complaint from Anju, who was the first to raise the issue.
Anju, the complainant, is a resident of Haldwani. She has urged for action, a sentiment echoed by several political parties. Following a legal review, the FIR was filed at the Haldwani police station under relevant sections based on her complaint.
SSP Manjunath mentioned that due to the seriousness of the case, senior officer IPS Jagdish Chandra has been assigned to lead the investigation. He encouraged anyone with evidence related to the case to contact the investigating officer.
While the FIR has been filed against unknown individuals, it is specifically linked to the alleged purification ceremony conducted at Ramleela Maidan.
In the meantime, Anju has dismissed claims by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state that the alleged purification was a response to ‘jihadi slogans.’ Speaking to reporters, she stated that she was present to hear Kharge’s speech that day and nothing untoward occurred. She accused individuals of posting edited videos and misleading information on social media for political gain. Anju clarified that she did not name anyone in the FIR and has no personal enmity with anyone involved.
She emphasized that sharing misleading videos without understanding the truth is an attempt to disrupt social harmony.
