ABVP Protests Over Allegations Against JNU Professor Amid Political Pressure Claims

New Delhi, September 8 (Daily Kiran) : The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a protest at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on September 8, 2026, in response to serious sexual harassment allegations made against a professor who is also a Congress MP. The protest included a symbolic effigy burning, highlighting concerns over the university’s internal complaint mechanisms and safety protocols.

Multiple female students have come forward with allegations against the professor, raising significant questions about the university’s handling of such serious accusations. The students have reported the matter to the university’s Internal Committee (IC), which is currently reviewing the case. However, the ABVP criticized the university administration and the left-leaning IC for their lack of action despite the gravity of the allegations.

The ABVP has voiced concerns about potential political influence affecting the proceedings. They questioned whether the professor’s affiliation with Congress is hindering appropriate action. The group also pointed out that representatives from leftist organizations within the IC, who advocate for women’s rights, appear to be delaying the hearing process under political pressure.

Mayank Panchal, president of ABVP JNU, stated that the lack of action reflects the true nature of the leftist IC and its affiliates. He emphasized that many individuals associated with leftist organizations have been implicated in past sexual harassment cases yet remain unpunished.

Praveen Kumar Piyush, minister of ABVP JNU, echoed similar sentiments, asserting that the leftist representatives in the IC are incapable of taking decisive action and should resign. He referenced a recent case involving an AISA cadre accused of sexual harassment, noting that the leftist representatives did not participate in the hearings.

The ABVP’s protests underscore a growing frustration over the handling of sexual harassment allegations in academic institutions, particularly when political affiliations seem to obstruct justice.
