Bengaluru, August 6: Basavaraj Horatti, the Chairman of the Karnataka Legislative Council, has announced his resignation, effective August 14. He stated that he will formally submit his resignation on that day.
In the meantime, the Congress party has declared senior leader Saleem Ahmed as their candidate for the Chairman position, sparking political controversy. The BJP criticized this move, arguing that announcing a candidate while the current Chairman is still in office goes against tradition. They emphasized that the position of Chairman holds constitutional dignity and should remain above party politics.
On Thursday, B.K. Hariprasad, President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), met with Horatti at his official residence to discuss the matter.
Horatti noted that the Karnataka Assembly’s monsoon session will commence on August 13, with tributes to deceased individuals being paid on the first day. He mentioned that he would resign immediately after the election of the Deputy Chairman on August 14.
He revealed that Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar informed him that this decision was made by the Congress high command. “The Chief Minister clarified that this is the final decision of the Congress high command, and he requested me to step down. I have accepted his request,” Horatti stated.
Expressing his displeasure over the situation, he remarked that diminishing the dignity of a constitutional position in this manner is inappropriate. According to him, the Chief Minister indicated that he must resign due to directives from the high command. He also mentioned that Siddaramaiah advised him not to discuss this issue with anyone.
Horatti confirmed that even after stepping down, he will continue to participate in the proceedings of the council as a regular member.
He expressed, “Comments suggesting a lack of trust in me have deeply hurt me. I do not wish to continue working in such an environment, which is why I have decided to resign.”
