Guwahati, August 6: Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has issued strict directives against unauthorized fundraising for flood relief across the state. On Thursday, he instructed the police to immediately halt all unapproved donation campaigns taking place on public roads.
The Chief Minister clarified that no individual or organization is permitted to collect funds for flood victims by stopping vehicles, using donation boxes, or displaying QR codes at traffic intersections and public places.
In a conversation with reporters, Sarma emphasized that the trend of soliciting donations from passersby and drivers in the name of flood relief will not be tolerated. He noted that such activities cause inconvenience to the public and raise questions about the transparency of the collected funds.
He stated, “No one will be allowed to collect donations on public roads in the name of flood relief. Strict legal action will be taken against those found involved in such unauthorized fundraising.”
The Chief Minister revealed that Assam Police has already been instructed to promptly shut down any such activities observed throughout the state. He mentioned that legal action will be taken against individuals standing with donation boxes or soliciting funds through QR codes from drivers and pedestrians.
These directives come at a time when reports have emerged from various parts of the state about fundraising for flood relief and rehabilitation at busy public locations and road intersections.
The state government has urged citizens to be cautious when donating and to only provide financial assistance through authorized government channels or recognized organizations, ensuring that help reaches the actual flood-affected families.
Notably, several districts in Assam have been severely impacted by flooding due to heavy rainfall and water from upstream catchment areas in recent weeks. Millions have been affected, and state administration, disaster relief agencies, and various organizations are engaged in relief and rehabilitation efforts.
The Chief Minister reiterated that public support for flood victims is welcome, but the fundraising process must be transparent, accountable, and within legal boundaries to prevent any misuse under the guise of humanitarian assistance.
