Bengaluru, August 4: A political controversy erupted in Karnataka following remarks made by Home Minister Priyank Kharge regarding protests by candidates for police constable recruitment. The BJP accused him of arrogance and insensitivity towards unemployed youth, demanding an apology.
On Monday, a video of Kharge’s statement went viral on social media, leading to widespread criticism. Responding to questions about the protests, Kharge defended police actions, stating that the government has responsibilities towards both the protesters and the candidates taking the exam.
He remarked, “What do you expect from us? We have responsibilities towards both the protesters and those appearing for the exam. Clearly, we had to detain some individuals.”
In a controversial statement regarding demands for his resignation, Kharge said, “I will resign. Let them go on a hunger strike for 25 days. If they do not calm down, we will use batons, and then we will resign.”
The BJP condemned this statement harshly. R. Ashok, the leader of the opposition in the assembly, claimed that the minister’s comments reflect arrogance and a lack of concern for job seekers.
In a statement, Ashok emphasized that Kharge’s remarks clearly indicate that he does not care about unemployed youth. He pointed out that candidates for the police constable recruitment exam earned their opportunity through hard work, dedication, and hope, not through family connections.
He added that those who inherit power may not understand the struggles of the youth. Ashok demanded that Kharge apologize for hurting the sentiments of millions of job seekers in the state and take moral responsibility by resigning immediately.
