Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta Advocates for Womens Rights Awareness to Enhance Safety

New Delhi, September 11 (Daily Kiran) : Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated on Friday that ensuring the safety of women and girls requires more than just legislation. It is crucial to raise awareness about their rights and available safety measures.

Speaking at a meeting of the Delhi Women’s Commission, Gupta highlighted the need to strengthen the commission’s online complaint system and enhance its grassroots activities.

She emphasized the importance of increasing awareness among girls about the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and cyber crimes. Gupta also called for ensuring that eligible adolescents receive information and access to HPV vaccinations. Additionally, she urged for an easier and more effective online system to address women’s complaints.

The meeting, held at Jan Seva Sadan, was attended by Commission Chairperson Lata Gupta, members, and senior officials.

Gupta stressed the necessity of educating college-going students, particularly young women, on how to protect themselves from cyber crimes. She recommended that the commission launch campaigns in colleges to inform students about online harassment, misuse of social media, cyber fraud, and other digital offenses. It is essential to guide them on where and how to file complaints if they encounter such incidents.

She pointed out that girls must be aware of their rights and the legal provisions available for their protection against sexual crimes. Gupta urged the commission to conduct awareness campaigns in schools and colleges to inform students about the POCSO Act and the support systems available for victims of exploitation or harassment.

Moreover, the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of reviewing the facilities at “One Stop Centers” (Sakhi) that assist women in crisis, along with government and NGO-run shelters and care centers.

Gupta insisted that these centers must provide a safe environment, along with necessary medical care, counseling, legal assistance, and rehabilitation services effectively.

She also highlighted the need to raise awareness about HPV vaccination to prevent cervical cancer. Gupta reiterated the importance of strengthening the online complaint system for the Women’s Commission, ensuring that women have access to an easy, reliable, and accessible mechanism for complaints related to domestic violence, human trafficking, sexual exploitation, and harassment.
