New Delhi, September 11 (Daily Kiran) : The ongoing BRICS summit in New Delhi has taken on heightened importance as global tensions escalate. Retired Commodore Ranjit Rai highlighted the significance of the conference, especially as the Russia-Ukraine war enters its fourth year and the Iran-Israel conflict intensifies.
Rai pointed out that the current global landscape has made the BRICS summit particularly critical. With the Russia-Ukraine war ongoing and recent U.S. and Israeli actions against Iran, the meeting led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is timely. Modi, recognized as a strong leader with friendly ties to many global figures, has invited Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is set to arrive soon, while Russian President Vladimir Putin has already attended and engaged in bilateral talks.
Additionally, a trade conference associated with BRICS is underway, underscoring the group’s economic focus. The BRICS coalition, comprising 11 nations, now represents nearly half of the world’s population and a significant portion of the global economy. This growing influence has prompted BRICS nations to seek a larger role and share in institutions like the United Nations and the International Monetary Fund.
As the Global South converges at the India Pavilion, the attention of the West and Europe is also drawn to the summit. Experts express optimism that this year’s conference will yield a solid and noteworthy joint statement, unlike the previous summit where UAE and Iran could not agree on a unified position.
Rai also discussed the implications of Modi’s meeting with Putin for U.S. and Western relations, emphasizing that Modi is conveying a message that India is not opposed to the West or any nation. He advocates for the philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” suggesting that the world should work collaboratively for mutual benefit.
The retired commodore noted Modi’s engagement with Iranian President Masoud Pajeshkian, as the U.S. aligns with Israel, a significant military power. With Israel’s military actions in Gaza and Lebanon justified under the guise of security, these pressing issues were likely addressed in Modi’s discussions with both Putin and Pajeshkian, though not all details will be made public. Modi understands the extent of India’s potential contributions to these global crises.
