Bengaluru, June 20: The Karnataka government has issued a clear statement regarding the proposed Mekedatu project on the Cauvery River. Officials emphasized that the project will not affect Tamil Nadu‘s water share. The initiative is designed to meet the drinking water needs of the Bengaluru region, ensure the stipulated water flow to Tamil Nadu, and generate 400 megawatts of electricity.
According to the government, the Mekedatu project will utilize 4.75 TMC of water to fulfill the drinking water requirements of Bengaluru. Additionally, it will regulate and ensure the monthly water flow at the Billigundlu border point for Tamil Nadu during normal years.
The Karnataka government noted that Tamil Nadu had challenged this project by filing a petition in the Supreme Court in 2018. However, on November 13, 2025, the Supreme Court dismissed this petition. The court stated that the Central Water Commission and the Cauvery Water Management Authority are expert bodies currently reviewing the matter. It also clarified that no state has the right to interfere with another state’s allocated water usage unless it diminishes their own share.
Furthermore, Tamil Nadu’s review petition was also rejected on April 15.
The Karnataka government stated that it is mandated to release 177.25 TMC of water to Tamil Nadu at Billigundlu during normal years, and there is no threat to this arrangement. As of June 18, 2026, a flow of 2.068 TMC of water has been recorded for the month of June.
The detailed project report (DPR) for the Mekedatu project has already been submitted to the Central Water Commission, which is currently reviewing it through various departments. Karnataka is actively pursuing the advancement of this project.
The government also asserted that every state has the right to protect its interests within the federal framework. However, it described Tamil Nadu’s continued objections after the Supreme Court’s clarification as unfortunate.
Nonetheless, the Karnataka government remains open to dialogue. It stated that if Tamil Nadu is willing to engage in bilateral talks, discussions can be held to resolve Mekedatu and other long-standing issues.
