Belagavi, April 28: In a remarkable display of defiance against social norms, a family in Barwad village, Belagavi district of Karnataka, organized a grand public procession to celebrate the birth of their daughter. This unique initiative has garnered admiration throughout the region.
Social activists Sambhaji Thorwat and his wife Suman Thorwat hosted this special event to welcome their newborn granddaughter, named Vaibhavi.
The procession featured traditional music, fireworks, a shower of flowers, and the distribution of sweets as they brought the newborn home. The parade commenced from the Lakshmi Temple in Ganganagar and concluded at the Thorwat family’s residence.
Participants danced to the tunes of halgi, ghumke, and jhanjha, while the streets were adorned with colorful rangoli. Local residents showered the mother and daughter with flowers in a warm welcome.
Initially, many assumed the celebration was for the birth of a son. However, upon learning that it was for a daughter, attendees expressed surprise and joy, with several joining the procession in support of this initiative.
After the homecoming, jalebi was distributed throughout the neighborhood to spread joy alongside the social message.
The child’s parents expressed gratitude to their family and community for the warm reception.
Grandmother Suman Thorwat remarked that the arrival of the newborn felt akin to the goddess Mahalakshmi coming home.
Sambhaji Thorwat emphasized that the purpose of this event was to eradicate the negative perceptions surrounding the birth of daughters in society. He stated that in a country that worships goddesses like Mahalakshmi, Durga, and Bharat Mata, daughters should also be welcomed with pride.
He expressed concern over female foeticide, asserting that with the right education and values, daughters can become role models for future generations. The family aims to inspire society to celebrate the birth of daughters with equal enthusiasm.
