Student Protests Escalate at Jamia Millia Islamia Over Closure of University Gates
Protests intensify at Jamia Millia Islamia as students demand the reopening of gates and reinstatement of the student union.

New Delhi, October 24 (Daily Kiran) : Students at Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi have ramped up their protests in response to the university administration’s decision to close all entry gates. This unrest has been ongoing for the past two weeks, fueled by demands from the student union. Protesters claim that the administration is attempting to suppress their movement through violent means, including the removal of students engaged in hunger strikes.
The students have outlined three key demands: the reinstatement of the student union, the lifting of restrictions on protesters, and the resignation of the proctor. They argue that the closure of the gates severely disrupts their studies, particularly as many rely on the Ibn Sina Library, which remains open until 2 AM.
One student stated, “Our strategy has been clear from the beginning. We have been protesting for 14-15 days, and our sole demand is for a student union. We will continue until our demands are met.” Another student expressed frustration over attempts to dismantle their protest site, asserting that the administration is creating a hostile environment on campus.
“We are here peacefully demanding our rights,” they said. “They are trying to forcibly remove us, but we will stand firm.” The students emphasized that their protests have been non-violent, despite the administration’s heavy-handed approach.
Concerns have been raised about the impact of the gate closures on students’ academic pursuits. One protester noted, “Many students live in shared rooms, making it difficult to study. The library is crucial for us, especially when classes have shifted online.”
As tensions rise, the students remain steadfast in their demands, insisting that the administration’s actions reflect fear rather than authority. They are calling for dialogue and resolution, hoping to restore normalcy to their academic environment.
