Bengaluru, June 26: Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar issued a stern warning to excise department officials on Friday. He stated that any attempts to tarnish the government’s image will not be tolerated. He emphasized that if necessary, laws will be enacted to facilitate the transfer of excise officials to other departments.
This warning comes in the wake of allegations made by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday. The ED accused the Karnataka excise department of operating like an organized gang for extortion, involving government officials, their associates, and some private individuals.
During a review meeting at Vidhana Soudha, the Chief Minister remarked, “If you work with respect, the government’s reputation will also grow. However, if you engage in activities that harm the government’s image, we will not remain silent. Do not think that excise department employees and officials cannot be transferred to other departments. If required, necessary legal amendments will be made. I am clearly instructing you to work with utmost caution and responsibility.”
He added, “I will not tolerate any individual or effort that brings disrepute to the government. Since the implementation of the AIB system in the department, progress has been made as expected. A decision has been made to issue 574 new licenses through e-auction. There will also be an option to pay license renewal fees in two installments.”
The Chief Minister noted, “I have observed how this department operates in neighboring states. We must strive to achieve the targets set for our department. If you work with honesty and respect, the department’s reputation will be maintained. A strong reputation for the department will bolster the government’s image. Adopt a professional attitude that enhances the government’s credibility; otherwise, strict action may become necessary.”
