Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah Discusses Old Pension Scheme Decision After Cabinet Meeting

Bengaluru, March 1: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced on Saturday that a decision regarding the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) will be made following detailed discussions in the Cabinet.

He emphasized that efforts will also be made to address demands related to salary increments and promotions.

The Chief Minister spoke at the inauguration of the state-level educational mega conference and Golden Jubilee program organized by the Karnataka State Primary School Teachers Association at the Palace Grounds in Bengaluru.

Siddaramaiah mentioned that various demands raised by teachers will be fulfilled in phases. He recalled that during his previous term as Finance Minister, one lakh teachers were recruited over five years.

He further noted that the sixth and seventh pay commissions have been implemented and assured that there will be sincere efforts to meet pending demands.

Highlighting the crucial role of teachers in nation-building, Siddaramaiah urged them to maintain good conduct and provide logical and scientific education to help children contribute to a progressive society. He called on teachers to prepare students who can shape the future of the country.

He pointed out that the literacy rate in the country was around 12 to 15 percent at the time of independence, which has now risen to approximately 74 percent. However, he stressed the importance of ensuring that the education provided is of good quality and addresses societal challenges.

The Chief Minister acknowledged that the lack of progress in educational reform is not solely due to teachers but also linked to systemic issues, including deep-rooted social inequalities. He referenced the caste system and current social practices, stating that education should help eliminate superstition and discrimination.

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Minister Madhu Bangarappa, Legislative Council members Puttanna and Ramoji Gouda, Prof. Baraguru Ramachandrappa, Basavaraj Gulikar, and Chandrashekar Nuggali, president of the State Primary School Teachers Association, were also present at the event.
