Kolkata, February 25: The controversy surrounding the special intensive revision of the voter list in West Bengal, led by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) under Mamata Banerjee, continues to escalate. In a recent development, the Supreme Court has ordered that the SIR (Systematic Identification of Residents) process be conducted under judicial supervision. TMC leader Dr. Shashi Panja endorsed the Supreme Court’s directive on Tuesday.
Dr. Panja stated, “The Supreme Court is closely monitoring the situation. The ongoing SIR process in West Bengal’s voter list is not being conducted properly. This is why the court has mandated that a judicial officer oversee the SIR. Many voters are being questioned about their citizenship and whether they are legitimate voters in this country. This is a tactic employed by the Election Commission.”
She further remarked, “The Commission is overstepping its authority by exerting excessive control over this process. To curb this arbitrariness, judicial officers have been appointed. However, when it was assessed that 250 judicial officers and numerous verifications were required, it became evident that even this many officers would not be able to complete the task in a timely manner. Therefore, it has been suggested that retired officers from the High Courts of Jharkhand and Odisha should be engaged to expedite this work.”
Dr. Panja also accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of feeling insecure and attempting to shift blame onto others. “This is a waste of time, and they have no agenda or work to focus on. Their aim is to sow discord among the people of Bengal. The SIR process should not have been rushed. Our fight is not against the SIR itself, but against the haste with which it is being conducted, which aims to disenfranchise many voters and ultimately secure a victory for the BJP.”
