Chennai, September 12 (Daily Kiran) : Residents across Tamil Nadu have expressed growing frustration over frequent power outages and low voltage issues, prompting opposition leader Udayanidhi Stalin to criticize the ruling Tamilaga Vetria Kadagam (TVK) government. Over the past two days, complaints have surged, leading many to take to the streets in protest.
In Thirunelveli district, residents of Mudaliarpetti and nearby areas demonstrated with torches and candles, voicing their anger over the persistent interruptions in electricity supply. Similarly, in the Tiruchi district’s Srirangam constituency, locals from Ammappettai and North Ariyavur continued their roadblock for the second consecutive day. They alleged that officials have failed to resolve ongoing power supply issues despite numerous complaints.
Protests were also reported near Kadavur in Karur district, where residents claimed they had been experiencing regular power cuts lasting between four to six hours for over ten days. In Pudukkottai and Rasipuram areas of Namakkal district, people faced difficulties due to unannounced outages lasting more than an hour.
Industrial units are equally concerned about the situation. Officials from factories at the Sidco Women’s Industrial Park near Tiruvallur staged a blockade at the local electricity board office. They reported that frequent outages and low-voltage supply were disrupting production and causing financial losses.
Electricity Minister Nirmal Kumar attributed the shortages to disruptions in wind energy production, noting that this issue has affected several states, not just Tamil Nadu. He assured that the state government has procured the necessary electricity from the general distribution network and mentioned that regular supply was restored on Thursday evening after sufficient power became available.
In response to the reports, Udayanidhi Stalin stated that the ongoing power cuts and voltage fluctuations have forced people to protest. He accused the electricity minister of making unnecessary claims rather than taking effective action to address the crisis. Stalin labeled the administration as a “fuse-blown TVK government,” arguing that it is struggling to ensure essential services, including electricity and milk distribution. He urged the state government to stop distracting strategies and focus on resolving the everyday problems faced by the public.
