Chester-le-Street, July 2: In the first T20 International match between India and England, rain played the role of a villain. Heavy downpours disrupted the game, leading to the cancellation of the second innings. However, during the first innings, England’s wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler reached a historic milestone.
Buttler became only the second wicketkeeper in T20 International cricket to achieve 100 dismissals, making him the first English wicketkeeper to do so. He accomplished this feat by stumping Indian batsman Harshit Rana off the bowling of Adil Rashid. Before Buttler, only South Africa’s Quinton de Kock had reached this milestone, with a total of 117 dismissals in the format. Unfortunately, Buttler did not get a chance to bat due to the rain interruption.
Earlier, Indian captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and opted to bat first. The team’s start was disappointing, with Sanju Samson failing again, scoring just one run before returning to the pavilion. Ishan Kishan also did not open his account and was run out. However, Iyer and Abhishek Sharma steadied the innings, forming a crucial partnership of 82 runs for the third wicket off 38 balls.
Abhishek played a brilliant innings, scoring 59 runs off just 24 balls, hitting 6 fours and 4 sixes. Meanwhile, Iyer faced 47 balls, scoring 68 runs with the help of 6 fours and 1 six. Tilak Varma contributed 13 runs. In the final overs, Shivam Dube showcased explosive batting, scoring an unbeaten 42 runs off just 21 balls, including 2 fours and 3 sixes. For England, Saqib Mahmood was the standout bowler, claiming 3 wickets, while Adil Rashid and Sam Curran took one wicket each.
