Chester-le-Street, July 1: Abhishek Sharma has etched his name in history by becoming the fastest player to hit 100 sixes in T20 International cricket among full member teams. The 25-year-old opener achieved this remarkable feat during the first match of the T20 series against England on Wednesday, facing just 785 balls to reach the milestone.
In this elite list, Evin Lewis ranks second, having completed 100 sixes off 789 balls, followed by Finn Allen (871), Tim David (931), and Colin Munro (963) in third, fourth, and fifth places, respectively. Surya Kumar Yadav, who is sixth on the list, took 1,007 balls to achieve the same.
With this achievement, Abhishek Sharma joins the ranks of Indian players who have hit a century of sixes in T20 International cricket. He is now the fifth Indian to do so, following Rohit Sharma (205), Surya Kumar Yadav (179), Hardik Pandya (126), and Virat Kohli (124).
In the ongoing match at Riverside Ground, Abhishek Sharma scored 59 runs off 24 balls, hitting 4 sixes and 6 fours. He reached his half-century in just 20 balls, making him the fastest Indian to score a fifty in T20 internationals in England. The previous record was held by KL Rahul, who achieved this in 27 balls in Manchester back in 2018.
After winning the toss and opting to bat, the Indian team lost the wickets of Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan (0) with just 6 runs on the board. Abhishek Sharma then stabilized the innings, partnering with captain Shreyas Iyer to add 82 runs for the third wicket in just 38 balls.
Under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer, the Indian team comprised Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Harshit Rana, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, and Varun Chakravarthy. England’s playing XI included Philip Salt, Jos Buttler (wicketkeeper), Harry Brook (captain), Jacob Bethel, Tom Banton, Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Liam Dawson, Saqib Mahmood, Adil Rashid, and Luke Wood.
