Ranchi, August 13: A significant initiative is underway to expand medical education at Jharkhand’s largest government hospital, RIMS in Ranchi. The institution plans to increase undergraduate (UG) seats from the current 180 to 250. Additionally, postgraduate (PG) seats will rise from 176 to 275, and post-PG seats will increase from 11 to 100. A detailed project report (DPR) is being prepared for these expansion plans.
A review meeting chaired by Ajay Kumar Singh, Additional Chief Secretary of the Health, Medical Education, and Family Welfare Department, took place on Wednesday. The meeting focused on RIMS’s academic expansion and hospital facilities.
It was noted during the meeting that the National Medical Commission (NMC) has conditionally approved the proposal to increase UG seats. Alongside the proposed seat increase, there are plans to significantly enhance RIMS’s infrastructure. Renovation and expansion plans for the old IPD, OPD, and academic blocks are in the works. Additionally, hostels and quarters located in RIMS’s North and South campuses will also undergo renovation.
A proposal of approximately ₹380 crore is being prepared for these projects, which will be submitted under a central sponsored scheme. Plans also include the construction of PG and post-PG hostels, along with the development of RIMS’s stadium complex. These projects are proposed to be developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, with an estimated expenditure of around ₹450 crore.
The meeting also provided important directives regarding patient management at RIMS. The Additional Chief Secretary emphasized the need for clear standard operating procedures (SOPs) for patient admissions and discharges. He also instructed that patients should be referred to RIMS whenever possible. The admission of patients arriving without referrals should be controlled and limited to necessary circumstances only.
Officials present at the meeting included Additional Secretary Shashi Prakash Singh, RIMS Executive Director Dr. DK Sinha, and Assistant Director Baghamare Prasad Krishna, among others from the health department and RIMS.
