Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown expressed his disappointment with the refereeing following his team’s narrow 114-110 loss to the Denver Nuggets. Despite delivering a game-high 33 points, Brown felt his aggressive play was not adequately recognised by the officials during the match.
Brown, known for his physical style on the court, attempted only four free throws across 34 minutes, with his first free throw coming midway through the third quarter. This was notably low compared to his usual average of around seven free throw attempts per game, despite driving to the basket 17.4 times in this game, which is among the highest in the league.

Concerns Over Officiating
“They were physical. They got away with a lot. The refs allowed them to get away with a lot,” Brown said after the game. “I would’ve loved to get to the free throw line a little bit more. I was physical, I was aggressive, I went up strong, I didn’t flop, but I kind of let the officiating get to my head a little bit.”
Brown’s shot attempts further supported his claims, with 16 field goals taken in the paint and 10 attempts near the rim, areas where he faced significant contact from the Nuggets’ defence. However, many of these aggressive defensive plays did not result in foul calls in favour of Brown.
Team Performance and Reflections
Aside from officiating issues, Brown acknowledged that the Celtics made too many turnovers, doubling the Nuggets with 14 against 7, and missed six of their 15 free throw tries. This contributed to a less effective overall performance, despite having won four consecutive games prior.
“I think the defence was good, but it wasn’t great,” Brown commented. “I think I should have been better in spots. And offensively, I think we were on top of each other a little bit. Our spacing wasn’t great. Stuff that we just got to clean up.”
Looking Ahead
With the Celtics now holding a 23-13 record and positioned third in the Eastern Conference, they aim to regroup quickly. Their next game is at home against the Toronto Raptors, who currently sit fourth in the conference.
Brown expressed a pragmatic attitude about the officiating, noting the inconsistency referees often show. “Tonight, I just was getting blank faces when I was asking officials (for a foul). In the last 10 games, it’s been free throws. Tonight, it wasn’t. So it is what it is,” he said.
