Boston, June 22: Germany has suffered a significant blow in their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign. Central defender Nico Schlotterbeck has been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament due to an ankle ligament injury.
The Borussia Dortmund defender sustained the injury during Saturday’s match against Ivory Coast, which Germany won 2-1. Schlotterbeck had to leave the field at halftime, and Antonio Rudiger replaced him. A scan the following day revealed that he had torn the medial collateral ligament in his left ankle.
In a statement on Monday, Germany confirmed, “Schlotterbeck has injured the medial collateral ligament in his left ankle. He will be sidelined for several months. Currently, he will remain with the team in the USA.”
This injury halts the 26-year-old’s impressive World Cup journey. He had become a key player in Julian Nagelsmann’s defensive lineup. Given the ongoing tournament, Germany cannot call up another player to replace him.
Nagelsmann expressed disappointment over the loss of one of his best defenders while praising Schlotterbeck’s spirit following the injury.
Nagelsmann stated, “We will miss Schlotty (Schlotterbeck) on the pitch, especially due to his exceptional defensive skills and build-up play. This could have been his World Cup. Yesterday, we all tried to boost his morale. The good news is that he is a very positive person.”
The German coach emphasized Schlotterbeck’s importance to the team, saying, “It’s great that he will stay with the team initially, as his presence off the pitch also impacts the squad. Despite his absence, we have solid options in central defense, including Jonathan Tah, Antonio Rudiger, Waldemar Anton, and Malik Thiaw.”
Despite this setback, Germany remains in a strong position in the tournament. The four-time World Champions have already secured the top spot in Group E. This marks their first advancement to the knockout stage in 12 years. Nagelsmann’s team will conclude their group-stage campaign against Ecuador on Thursday.
