Lucknow witnessed a significant step towards strengthening tourism and cultural ties between Uttar Pradesh and Japan. A high-level meeting in Lucknow brought together a delegation from Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, and senior officials from the Uttar Pradesh government to explore new dimensions of collaboration in wellness tourism, golf tourism, cuisine exchange, Buddhist heritage, literary, and knowledge-based tourism.
The meeting was chaired by Uttar Pradesh’s Tourism and Culture Minister, Jaiveer Singh, who highlighted the deep cultural and spiritual bonds that form the foundation of India-Japan relations. He emphasised that tourism and culture could provide a sustainable and long-term basis for economic partnership between the two countries.
Minister Singh pointed out the unique global significance of Uttar Pradesh’s Buddhist heritage, noting that all major sites linked to Lord Buddha’s life—Sarnath, Kushinagar, and Kapilvastu—are located within the state. He also revealed that serious consideration is being given to organising a ‘UP Festival’ in Japan during April or May 2025, which would serve as a vibrant platform to showcase Uttar Pradesh’s culture, traditions, and tourism potential.
Amrit Abhijat, Additional Chief Secretary of the Department of Tourism, Culture and Religious Affairs, underlined the cultural synergy between Japanese concepts like ‘Ikigai’, ‘Wabi-Sabi’, ‘Zen’, and ‘Zazen’ and Indian civilisational thought. He expressed optimism that joint efforts in wellness, philosophy, and tourism would offer enriching experiences for people of both nations.
Highlighting sports tourism prospects, Abhijat mentioned the golf courses available in Agra, Lucknow, and Varanasi, urging tour operators to develop specialised packages catering to Japanese tourists. He also noted that tourism today goes beyond traditional hotels and sightseeing, encompassing curated experiences, culinary journeys, literary dialogues, and learning tourism as new growth areas.
Junichi Ishidera, Deputy Governor of Yamanashi Prefecture, recalled that since the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding in December 2024, communication between Uttar Pradesh and Yamanashi has steadily strengthened. He described Yamanashi as a gateway for Uttar Pradesh in Japan and announced that a Japanese delegation of around 200 members will visit Uttar Pradesh in August 2025, expected to further boost trade, tourism, and cultural cooperation.
This renewed partnership marks a promising chapter in India-Japan relations by opening up diverse avenues in tourism and culture, bringing the two regions closer through shared heritage and modern collaboration.
