New Delhi, July 28: A source from the Delhi Police revealed that between July 20 and 25, a total of 2,873 individuals with criminal backgrounds were present at the student protest site in Jantar Mantar.
A senior police official stated that these individuals were identified using facial recognition systems (FRS) and other technological means. Most of the identified individuals were spotted by FRS cameras in areas such as Seelampur, Chand Bagh, Jafrabad in northeast Delhi, and in some colonies of southeast Delhi, including Jamia Nagar, Shaheen Bagh, and Okhla.
The police are currently investigating whether these individuals were involved in the violence that occurred on July 20 in Jantar Mantar and other parts of New Delhi. The identified criminals are linked to serious offenses, including sexual assault, murder, crimes against minors (POCSO), kidnapping, and robbery.
The official noted that some of these alleged criminals repeatedly returned to the protest site of the Cockroach Public Party. Serious charges have been filed against these individuals. Among the 2,873 protesters with criminal records, at least 989 are suspected of involvement in heinous crimes.
Delhi Police’s FRS is an advanced system equipped with high-resolution cameras installed at entry and exit points of the Jantar Mantar protest site, as well as throughout the city, including border entry points.
These cameras were set up to monitor anti-social elements and prevent them from causing disturbances disguised as protesting students. Images captured by the FRS cameras are sent to the Delhi Police database, which contains records of criminals, fugitives, individuals with criminal backgrounds, and notorious offenders, based on data recorded by various police stations.
