Assam and Bihar Governments Withdraw Cases Against NEET-UG Protesters

Patna, July 28: In response to nationwide protests regarding irregularities in the NEET-UG examination, the governments of Assam and Bihar have announced that they will withdraw cases against protesters and release those who were arrested.

An official press release from Assam’s Home and Political Department stated that by 6 PM on July 26, five cases had been registered in the state concerning the NEET-UG exam irregularities, resulting in the arrest of 13 individuals.

The government decided to halt any legal action against the protesters after reviewing the circumstances surrounding the demonstrations. They emphasized the need for accountability and reforms in the examination system and higher education.

According to the government order, Assam police will not take any adverse or punitive action against individuals involved in the protests. They have been instructed to initiate the process of withdrawing all registered cases as quickly as possible, regardless of the legal stage.

Additionally, the government has issued directives to review all arrests and detentions related to these cases, ensuring the prompt release of those detained. They clarified that no direct or indirect action would be taken against the protesters in the future, effectively closing the matter.

Similarly, the Bihar government also released a statement providing relief to protesters. They noted that significant decisions were made in light of the irregularities in the NEET-UG exam, the need for improvements in the examination system, and accountability in higher education.

According to the Bihar government, no punitive, retaliatory, or adverse legal action will be taken against individuals involved in protests held before 6 PM on July 26. The legal process to withdraw all FIRs, complaints, and show-cause notices registered during this period will begin immediately.

The government also announced that individuals arrested and detained in cases registered before 6 PM on July 26 would be released promptly. Furthermore, there will be no direct or indirect action against named individuals in these cases in the future.

Nationwide, students and various organizations had staged large-scale protests against irregularities in the NEET-UG exam. Protesters demanded transparency in the examination process, a fair investigation, and action against those responsible.
