Jammu Hosts Half Marathon to Promote Drug-Free Lifestyle

Jammu, March 29: The Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department, along with the Sports Council, organized the ‘Jammu Half Marathon’ on Sunday. This event featured 21 km, 10 km, and 5 km races aimed at promoting a drug-free lifestyle among the youth. International athletes participated in the half marathon.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah flagged off the 21 km race. The event was also attended by Minister Satish Sharma, actor and model Milind Soman, actress Gul Panag, Sports Council Secretary Nuzhat Gul, and Joint Director of the Tourism Department Ejaz Kaiser.

During the Jammu Half Marathon, Minister Satish Sharma stated that the event would boost tourism and spread a message of brotherhood, inspiring people to stay healthy and fit. He mentioned that just as Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was made the brand ambassador for ‘Fit India’ by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, similar initiatives will encourage fitness among the public. He added that more events will be organized in the coming days, including excellent infrastructure for children. The minister also announced plans to host the IPL next year and to organize water sports events.

He emphasized the need to combat drug abuse, stating, “I live in a border area where drones come in every day. Anyone involved in this is a traitor, whether they are a leader, police officer, or an administrative official. Such individuals will not be spared.”

Actress Gul Panag remarked, “Every marathon promotes running, but this one aims for peace. I want to congratulate all residents of Jammu for participating in the first half marathon in such large numbers.”

She noted that the administration provided excellent support for the event, asserting that fitness is a great way to live life. “If we do not keep ourselves fit, it will affect our lives,” she added.

Sports Council Secretary Nuzhat Gul mentioned that despite the rain on Sunday, a large number of athletes showed up to participate in the race. Volunteers stood by to support the event.

Joint Director of the Tourism Department Ejaz Kaiser stated that there were no challenges until 1 AM, as everything was well-organized and planned. However, there were slight weather-related delays in the morning. Nevertheless, they successfully started on time and sent all runners on their designated routes. Given the weather conditions, the enthusiasm of the people of Jammu and the participation of both national and international athletes were very encouraging.
