Family Refuses to Reunite with Mentally Ill Woman Found in Mumbai

Kolkata, July 2: Amateur radio operators in West Bengal are facing challenges in reuniting a mentally ill woman with her family, whom they discovered in Mumbai.

According to relatives, the 20-year-old mother of a son and a daughter suffered a mental breakdown due to abuse from her husband, leading her to flee from home.

Ambrish Nag Biswas, secretary of the West Bengal Radio Club (WBRC), reported that she was found in Gujarat about six years ago and was brought back to her in-laws’ home in Gangarampur, Uluberia, in West Bengal. Unfortunately, her husband and in-laws did not provide her with treatment, and she went missing again.

The WBRC is an organization of amateur radio operators with a vast network across the country. They collaborate with government agencies to establish alternative communication networks during natural disasters like cyclones and assist in reuniting mentally ill individuals rescued by the police with their families.

A few years ago, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) spotted a woman at Shivaji Nagar station in Pune. She had been drugged by individuals attempting to traffic her. While the criminals were not apprehended, security personnel rescued her and admitted her to a hospital. Subsequently, the court placed her in a shelter for women in Mumbai, where she lived for nearly ten years.

Nag Biswas stated that since she spoke Bengali, the shelter authorities, Mumbai police, and others contacted the WBRC to help locate her family. They began their search and successfully traced her family in Gangarampur. Her daughter was overjoyed to see her mother’s pictures and videos. However, her husband and other in-laws have refused to take her back.

The family claims they are unaware of what she has been doing since her disappearance. The organization also reached out to the woman’s brother, but he appeared reluctant to accept her back.
