Srinagar, June 24: The Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has officially announced the launch of the “Developed India – Guarantee for Employment and Livelihood Mission (Rural) (VB-G Ram Ji) Scheme, 2026.” This initiative will be implemented across all rural areas of the Union Territory starting July 1, 2026.
This new scheme will replace the previously running Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act and is viewed as a significant improvement in rural employment and livelihood creation. It aligns with the vision of “Developed India 2047.”
Under this scheme, each eligible rural family will be guaranteed 125 days of wage employment per year, an increase from the previous 100 days. Employment must be provided within 15 days upon request; otherwise, applicants will receive unemployment benefits. The payment of wages will be made weekly or bi-weekly, with provisions for compensation in case of delays.
To support agricultural activities, the scheme includes a mandatory 60-day break during peak sowing and harvesting seasons, ensuring sufficient labor availability for farming tasks.
The initiative will focus on four key areas: water security, rural infrastructure, livelihood enhancement, and climate and disaster resilience. Development projects will be planned through the “Developed Gram Panchayat Plan” using GIS technology and the PM Gati Shakti platform, ensuring transparency and coordination.
Special provisions have been made for vulnerable groups, including single women, persons with disabilities, senior citizens, particularly vulnerable tribal groups, freed bonded laborers, and transgender individuals. Separate rural employment guarantee cards will be issued for them, with a commitment that at least one-third of the beneficiaries will be women.
The government claims that the enhanced employment guarantee, agriculture-friendly design, technology-based administration, and robust rural infrastructure will usher in a new chapter in rural development, promoting inclusive and sustainable growth.
