Ahmedabad, August 28: The festival of Raksha Bandhan, celebrating the sacred bond between brothers and sisters, was observed with great love and enthusiasm across the country. In various prisons in Gujarat, women tied rakhis to their brothers who are incarcerated. Many women appeared emotional as they reunited with their brothers behind bars.
At the Sabarmati Central Jail in Ahmedabad, sisters visited their imprisoned brothers to celebrate Raksha Bandhan. They tied rakhis on their brothers’ wrists, expressing that they eagerly await this day each year.
The jail administration made all necessary arrangements to ensure that siblings could meet without any difficulties. Police Superintendent Gaurav Agrawal stated that family members were allowed to visit inmates on this sensitive occasion. He noted, “This is a significant moment for us as well. The visits provide mental support to the prisoners.”
The celebration was also special at the Rajkot Central Jail, where sisters were permitted to tie rakhis to their brothers. According to the jail administration, around 1,200 sisters participated in the event. Each sister was required to bring an Aadhaar card for identification, and no outside items were allowed inside for security reasons.
Jail Superintendent V.P. Gohel remarked, “In our Hindu society, Raksha Bandhan is a sacred festival. Here, individuals are separated from their families and society. We believe that this occasion will evoke feelings of remorse in the prisoners regarding their crimes.”
Similarly, the Jamnagar District Jail hosted a special event for Raksha Bandhan, where sisters tied rakhis to their incarcerated brothers. The jail administration arranged for a thali with kumkum, rice, and lamps for the ritual. Sisters arrived with rakhis and sweets after a long wait, performing the ceremony with traditional customs. They also sweetened their brothers’ mouths with treats.
Jail Superintendent Balbhadra Singh Raizada mentioned, “Today, over 500 sisters tied rakhis to their brothers in Jamnagar District Jail, while about 20 female inmates also tied rakhis to their brothers.”
At the Vadodara Central Jail, the festival was celebrated in an emotional and unique manner. Sisters came to the jail to tie rakhis on their brothers’ wrists, honoring the sacred bond of siblinghood. The atmosphere in the jail was filled with emotion as sisters prayed for their brothers’ safety and brighter futures. In return, brothers gifted their sisters tulsi plants, expressing affection and promoting environmental conservation.
