New Delhi, March 4: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah held discussions with members of civil society on Wednesday at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar. The meeting focused on recent events in Iran, where the Iranian Supreme Leader and others lost their lives, and a prayer (Fatiha) was offered for the victims.
The Chief Minister’s office released a statement saying, “In light of recent developments in West Asia, the Chief Minister engaged with religious leaders and civil society members in Srinagar on Wednesday. Attendees expressed their concerns about the situation and extended condolences for the loss of life in Iran.”
CM Omar Abdullah emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and harmony in Jammu and Kashmir. He also stressed the need to respect the sentiments of the people and ensure that expressions of grief and mourning are conducted in a peaceful and responsible manner.
This was the first engagement between CM Omar Abdullah and civil society members since the onset of attacks on Iran by the United States and Israel.
The discussion included key figures from civil society, such as religious leaders, social activists, and representatives from the business community. The Chief Minister condemned the attacks on Iran and asserted that the right to change power belongs solely to the Iranian people, not external forces. He has been in constant contact with the Ministry of External Affairs regarding the safe return of Kashmiri students studying in Iran.
It is important to note that prior to the conflict, CM Omar Abdullah had urged parents to take the Ministry of External Affairs’ advice seriously and to bring their children back before the Iranian airspace was closed.
Meanwhile, strict restrictions continued for the third day to maintain law and order in the valley. All schools, colleges, and universities will remain closed until March 7. Internet speeds have been reduced to prevent mischievous elements from uploading inflammatory content on social media.
The police have also registered FIRs against several individuals, including MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and former Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu, for allegedly uploading objectionable material.
