New Delhi: India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a meeting on Sunday with a delegation of US Congress members in New Delhi. The delegation included Representatives Mike Rogers, Adam Smith, and Jimmy Panetta, along with US Ambassador to India Sergio Gore. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations, developments in the Indo-Pacific region, and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Sharing details of the meeting on the social media platform X, Jaishankar said, “Engaged in a good conversation with the US delegation comprising Representatives Mike Rogers, Adam Smith, and Jimmy Panetta, along with US Ambassador Sergio Gore. Discussions covered various aspects of India-US relations, the Indo-Pacific, and the Ukraine dispute. Congressional engagement has always been an important aspect of our relationship.”
Recent Diplomatic Interactions
Earlier, on January 18, Jaishankar met with US Senator Steve Daines in Delhi. The two discussed bilateral ties and their strategic significance in detail. The Ministry of External Affairs described the meeting as a “broad and open discussion on the strategic importance of our bilateral relationship.”
On January 13, US Secretary of State Mark Rubio spoke with Jaishankar over the phone. They reviewed key areas of cooperation including civil nuclear energy, trade talks, and regional security in the Indo-Pacific.
Speaking about the conversation with Rubio, Jaishankar said, “We discussed trade, critical minerals, nuclear cooperation, defence, and energy. We agreed to remain in contact on these and other issues.”
Focus on Civil Nuclear Cooperation and Strategic Partnership
Rubio congratulated India on implementing the “Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy Bill,” a recent law that forms part of India’s nuclear energy framework. US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Piggott highlighted that the legislation is expected to enhance US-India civil nuclear cooperation, increase opportunities for American companies, advance shared energy security goals, and secure critical mineral supply chains.
Piggott added, “Both sides also exchanged views on regional developments and reaffirmed their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.”
US Ambassador Sergio Gore described the call as positive. On X, he noted, “We discussed the next steps in our bilateral trade negotiations, critical minerals, and the upcoming meeting next month. The US is keen to work on legislation that strengthens civil nuclear cooperation between the two countries.”
This series of engagements underscores the ongoing efforts by India and the US to deepen their strategic and economic partnership amid evolving global challenges.
