ITR Refund 2025: When Will You Receive Your Refund? Here’s the Latest Update

ITR Refund
The Income Tax Return (ITR) filing process for the Financial Year 2024-25 (Assessment Year 2025-26) has officially commenced, with over 1.23 lakh returns filed within just five days of the launch. Even more impressively, nearly 90% of these have already been verified. While taxpayers have welcomed the opening of the ITR window, the key question on everyone’s mind is: when will the refund actually be processed and credited?

A Slightly Delayed Start to ITR Filing

The ITR filing process got off to a slower-than-usual start this year. The primary reason behind the delay was the late release of the income tax forms and the required utilities. The Income Tax Department began the process with Excel-based Utility V1.0 and a Validation Tool, supporting ITR-1 (Sahaj) and ITR-4 (Sugam). Soon after the offline utility was launched, the online filing portal was also activated with pre-filled data functionality.

Although the ITR forms were made available in late April, the utility for filing them was only rolled out later, causing a lag in early filings. Despite this, taxpayer enthusiasm remained high.

Record-Breaking Filing in the First Week

Within just five days of the utility’s launch, more than 1.23 lakh ITRs were filed, and over 1.12 lakh were verified. This clearly indicates that Indian taxpayers are keen to fulfill their responsibilities early and are looking forward to timely refunds.

When Will Refund Processing Begin?

According to brokerage firm Angel One, the Income Tax Department is expected to begin processing returns by mid-June 2025. Once your return is verified and found to be error-free, the refund is usually credited to your bank account within 5 to 7 working days. This timeline applies only to verified returns with no discrepancies.

What Happens During Verification?

Before your return is processed, the Centralized Processing Centre (CPC) conducts a thorough cross-verification of the information filed. The return data is matched against various third-party records including:

  • Form 26AS

  • Annual Information Statement (AIS)

  • Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS)

These sources are updated by employers, banks, and financial institutions via TDS returns. As the deadline for submitting TDS returns for the last quarter was May 31, complete data is expected to reflect on the portal by mid-June.

Verification Is Crucial

The ITR will only be processed after successful verification. You can verify your return through several methods:

  • Aadhaar OTP

  • Net Banking

  • Sending a signed physical ITR-V form to CPC Bengaluru

Unverified returns are not processed, so make sure to complete this step immediately after filing.

Tech-Driven Efficiency

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently informed Parliament that the average time for ITR processing in 2013 was 93 days. Thanks to technological advancements, this has now been brought down to around 10 days, making the refund process significantly faster and more efficient.

Bottom Line

If you’ve already filed and verified your return, and there are no discrepancies, your refund could reach you by the end of June 2025. For those still planning to file, ensure accuracy in your data and verify your return promptly to avoid any delays.
