New Delhi, April 29: During the ‘Resilient Futures Summit 2026’ held in the national capital, Union Minister Prahlad Joshi stated that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India has made significant strides in renewable energy.
He announced a target of achieving 500 gigawatts of energy capacity by 2030. Notably, the goal of generating 50% of electricity from non-fossil sources has already been met five years ahead of schedule. This indicates that the government’s set targets are being achieved ahead of time.
The minister highlighted that approximately 30% of India’s electricity production now comes from sources such as wind energy, solar energy, battery storage, and pumped storage. Recently, during peak demand periods, nearly two-thirds of electricity needs were met through renewable energy, demonstrating that India is not only increasing energy production but also effectively transmitting it. He referred to this as India’s ‘success story.’
Sharing his experience as a former coal minister, he noted that the import of coal, which can be replaced by domestic resources, has decreased. However, some specific power plants and the metal industry still require coal imports. He clarified that where Indian coal is utilized, there is no need for imports.
The Union Minister mentioned that the country is expanding its energy capacity on a large scale, with the government working swiftly to meet the set targets by 2027. While significant capacity has already been established, much work remains, which is being pursued through a ‘utility-led model.’
He also emphasized that in recent years, India has made remarkable progress in solar energy and the green energy sector. Under Prime Minister Modi’s guidance, the country has advanced rapidly in this field, with many large projects set to continue in the future.
