Irans Foreign Minister Warns US of Retaliation Without Agreement

Washington, March 2: Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the recent US airstrikes that resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. He labeled these attacks as illegal and stated that Tehran would respond without any agreement. Speaking to local media outlet ABC News, Araghchi dismissed Washington’s justifications entirely.

He remarked, “What the United States is doing is an act of aggression. What we are doing is an act of self-defense.”

This statement clarifies Iran’s diplomatic and legal stance, portraying the US as the aggressor while legitimizing Tehran’s response under international law. Araghchi offered no signs of de-escalation in his remarks.

He asserted, “We are defending ourselves, no matter what it takes.”

His language suggests a warning of open and extensive retaliation. Araghchi did not specify a timeline, potential targets, or indicate any willingness for dialogue.

These comments come at a time when US officials describe an ongoing campaign aimed at weakening Iran’s missile infrastructure. However, Araghchi did not acknowledge any damage to Iran’s military capabilities nor indicate instability in the political order following Khamenei’s death.

Meanwhile, US lawmakers have indicated that the campaign will continue. Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Tom Cotton stated that attention will systematically focus on Iran’s missiles, missile launchers, and ultimately its missile manufacturing capabilities in the coming days.

He warned, “There is no doubt that Iran will continue to target our bases in the region, our Arab allies, and Israel.”

Other US leaders have questioned the intelligence basis for the attacks. Senator Mark Warner noted, “There was no imminent threat to the United States. We have very little information on what will happen next after the Supreme Leader’s death.”

Senator Adam Schiff also criticized the scale of the action, stating, “There was no basis for this extensive military campaign aimed at regime change.”

Following the death of its Supreme Leader, Iran is now entering a transitional phase. According to its constitution, the responsibility for selecting a new leader lies with the Assembly of Experts. However, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) holds significant influence within the system.
