Tehran, August 4: Amid rising tensions with the United States, reports of internal discord within Iran’s current regime have emerged. In light of speculation regarding his position, Iranian President Masoud Pageeshkian stated on Tuesday that he will not resign and remains committed to his role.
President Pageeshkian asserted, “We are fully coordinated with the military forces. I will not resign, and I stand firm on my decision. If I choose to resign, I will officially announce it.” His comments followed remarks from senior cleric Mohammad-Bagher Kharrrazi, whose sister is married to the brother of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.
Kharrrazi claimed that Pageeshkian had threatened to resign 28 times. However, he warned the president that his next resignation would be accepted. Following this warning, Pageeshkian ceased his resignation threats.
Kharrrazi, referencing Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, stated, “If he resigns one more time, I will approve it. I will simply write ‘approved’ beneath it, and that will be the end of the matter.” He added, “Pageeshkian no longer has the courage. They have all backed down.”
According to Iranian International, Pageeshkian had previously argued that he could no longer fulfill his constitutional responsibilities and requested to step down immediately. However, Mehdi Tabatabai, Deputy of Communication and Information in Pageeshkian’s office, dismissed Kharrrazi’s resignation claims as baseless and outright false.
In May, Pageeshkian submitted a resignation to Khamenei’s office, stating that his government had been sidelined in major decisions and that hardliners had taken control of affairs. At that time, Iran denied any claims related to the resignation.
