Faster, Smarter Charging on the Way
As per a report by 91Mobiles, two new MagSafe charger models — A3502 and A3503 — have been spotted on Taiwan’s National Communications Commission (NCC) website. While these chargers maintain the signature design of existing Apple MagSafe accessories, the key difference lies in their cable length and, more importantly, their capabilities.
The A3502 model features a 1-meter braided cable, while the A3503 version extends it to 2 meters. However, it’s not just about cable convenience — the real advancement lies in support for Qi2.2, a new wireless charging standard from the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC).
What Is Qi2.2 and Why Does It Matter?
The Qi2.2 standard will allow MagSafe chargers to deliver up to 45W of wireless power. Combined with Apple’s internal optimization, the iPhone 17 series could see wireless charging speeds of up to 50W. This is a significant jump from the 15W limit imposed by the Qi2.0-compatible MagSafe chargers and even beyond the 25W support on the iPhone 16 series under Qi2.1.
Backward Compatibility for Older iPhones
Apple isn’t leaving behind users of older devices. While the iPhone 17 series will benefit the most from the Qi2.2 upgrade, iPhone models from iPhone 11 through iPhone 16 will also be compatible with the new chargers. These users can expect improved magnetic alignment and moderately faster wireless charging, although they won’t be able to reach the 50W threshold due to hardware limitations.
The Bigger Picture: A New Era in iPhone Charging
Apple’s push toward 50W wireless charging aligns with growing industry demands for faster, more convenient, and efficient wireless power delivery. The addition of braided cables, enhanced alignment, and improved backward compatibility shows Apple’s intent to provide a seamless experience not just for new buyers, but also for loyal iPhone users with older models.
With the iPhone 17 expected to launch in September 2025, and Qi2.2 being finalized by WPC around the same time, Apple could once again redefine what wireless charging means in the flagship smartphone market.
