Chennai, June 8: The arrest of YouTuber Maridhas has sparked intense political debate in Tamil Nadu. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly condemned this action, labeling it an assault on freedom of expression.
Vanathi Srinivasan, the national president of the BJP’s women’s wing and a former MLA from Coimbatore South, denounced Maridhas’s arrest on Monday. She accused the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government of attempting to suppress critical voices and stifle democratic dissent.
Maridhas was apprehended at his residence in Madurai. He faces allegations of targeting Chief Minister MK Stalin, several ministers, and ruling party legislators through his videos. Leaders from the ruling party claim that the YouTuber made defamatory comments against government officials using content generated by artificial intelligence (AI).
Following the arrest, the BJP accused the state government of limiting freedom of expression. In a statement released on social media, Vanathi Srinivasan described the action as “extremely condemnable,” asserting that it reflects the government’s intolerance towards criticism.
She alleged that Maridhas was arrested solely for questioning and criticizing the operations of the DMK government. She referred to the government as a “reels model government,” emphasizing that it is a fundamental right of every citizen to expose the shortcomings and mistakes of the government in a democracy.
Vanathi stated that resorting to police action and arrests to silence critics is a direct attack on freedom of expression and democratic values. According to her, governments should always be open to criticism and public scrutiny in a democratic system.
The BJP leader claimed that the current government is employing the same tactics that opposition parties once criticized during the previous DMK regime. She noted that there have been previous instances of pressure and arrests against those who highlighted the government’s alleged failures, and now a similar atmosphere seems to be re-emerging.
She asserted that no government should attempt to forcibly suppress critical and dissenting voices. If criticism arises, it should be addressed through facts, clarifications, and dialogue.
Vanathi Srinivasan concluded, “Responses to criticism should come through reason and accountability, not arrests.”
Following Maridhas’s arrest, a political clash between the ruling DMK and opposition parties in Tamil Nadu is likely to escalate. Issues surrounding freedom of expression, criticism on social media, and the role of law enforcement agencies may become central topics in the state’s political discourse.
