Lausanne, October 23 (Daily Kiran): The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has issued a stern reprimand to Indonesia after it refused to grant visas to Israeli gymnasts for the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships being held in Jakarta from October 19 to 25. The IOC stated that the move violated the principles of non-discrimination in global sports and announced that Indonesia will no longer be considered to host any future Olympic or related events.

In a strong statement released on Wednesday, the IOC’s Executive Board said, “It is the host country’s responsibility to ensure that all eligible athletes, teams, and officials can participate in international sports events without any form of discrimination.”
The decision came after the Israeli Gymnastics Federation appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against Indonesia’s visa denial, but the CAS dismissed the appeal. As a result, Israeli athletes were unable to compete in the championship.
IOC Suspends Future Hosting Talks
The IOC declared that it will cease all discussions with the Indonesian National Olympic Committee (NOC) regarding potential hosting of the Olympic Games, Youth Olympic Games, or any Olympic-related events or conferences until the Indonesian government guarantees fair entry to all countries’ athletes and officials.
Furthermore, the IOC has advised all international sports federations to refrain from awarding Indonesia any international events or meetings until such assurances are provided.
The IOC has also summoned representatives of the Indonesian NOC and the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) to its Lausanne headquarters for a detailed discussion on the matter.
Repeated Incidents of Political Boycotts
The Indonesian government justified its decision as a symbolic act of support for Palestine, refusing entry to Israeli gymnasts. This is not the first time Indonesia has faced international backlash over its stance on Israeli participation in sporting events.
In July 2023, Indonesia withdrew from hosting the World Beach Games over controversy regarding Israel’s inclusion. Earlier, in March 2023, FIFA stripped Indonesia of hosting rights for the Under-20 World Cup after protests from two provincial governors opposing Israel’s participation.
These incidents occurred even before the latest round of conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, which has since seen a fragile ceasefire.
The IOC’s latest action underscores its commitment to ensuring that sports remain free from political interference and that athletes are not penalised for geopolitical disputes.
