PM Modi Strengthens Maritime Security Ties with Seychelles Through Fast Patrol Vessel Transfer

Victoria, June 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a significant step in enhancing maritime security between India and Seychelles on Saturday. The transfer of the Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) ‘Lespwar’ to the Seychelles Coast Guard marks a crucial development in the defense and maritime security partnership between the two nations.

In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, Prime Minister Modi stated, “I participated in the transfer ceremony of the Fast Patrol Vessel Lespwar, along with ambulances and utility vehicles for the Seychelles Defense Force, at the Seychelles Coast Guard base with President Dr. Patrick Herminie.”

He emphasized that this transfer is an important move to strengthen defense and maritime security cooperation between India and Seychelles. “This is one of many initiatives through which India continues to support Seychelles in meeting its security needs,” he added.

Alongside the Fast Patrol Vessel, Prime Minister Modi also handed over six ambulances, ten utility vehicles, and five laser radial boats to Seychelles. These assets aim to bolster Seychelles’ maritime surveillance and enhance the security of its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

“We take pride in being a reliable partner for Seychelles, standing by its side at every step. We will continue to work together to strengthen the friendship between our two countries and enhance maritime capabilities,” said Prime Minister Modi.

His visit coincided with the golden jubilee celebrations of Seychelles’ National Day, where he served as the chief guest, further solidifying cooperation between the two nations. This marks his second official visit to Seychelles; earlier this year, President Patrick Herminie visited India on an official trip.

Before Modi’s visit, the Seychelles Presidential Office stated, “India is one of Seychelles’ closest and most trusted development partners. India has consistently supported infrastructure, health, education, and various community development projects. Both countries are also collaborating to maintain peace, security, and stability in the Indian Ocean region.”

The Presidential Office also noted that Prime Minister Modi’s visit symbolizes the long-standing friendship and strong partnership between India and Seychelles, which has maintained diplomatic relations since Seychelles gained independence in 1976.
