Ranchi, September 1: An international conference on voter registration and voter lists will commence in Ranchi on September 2-3. Titled “Voter Registration and Voter Register-2026,” the event will focus on the processes of voter registration and list preparation in India and several other countries.
A total of 57 research papers will be presented at the conference, as announced by Chief Electoral Officer Ravi Kumar during a press briefing on Tuesday at the Election House. The conference will take place at the National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL), Ranchi, organized by the Chief Electoral Officer’s office in Jharkhand in collaboration with the Central University of Jharkhand. IIM Ranchi, NUSRL, and St. Xavier’s College, Ranchi, are the knowledge partners for this event.
Kumar mentioned that abstracts were solicited from various institutions, research scholars, and election experts both domestically and internationally. A total of 230 abstracts were received, from which 80 were shortlisted. Ultimately, 57 papers were selected based on expert evaluations and will be presented in different technical sessions during the conference.
Key topics to be discussed include voter registration, management of voter lists, digitization, engaging new voters, and increasing public participation in the electoral process. The conference will also address the systems adopted by various countries and states, along with the challenges they face.
The Chief Electoral Officer emphasized that an accurate and updated voter list is essential for fair elections. The conference aims to bring together practical experiences and academic research on election-related issues. This will aid in understanding existing problems related to voter registration and voter lists, and in finding better solutions.
During the inaugural session, a book on “Voter Registration and Voter Register” and a commemorative publication for the conference will be launched. Attendance is expected from electoral officials, policy experts, legal specialists, academics, researchers, journalists, and representatives from civil society.
Ravi Kumar noted that Jharkhand has been tasked with studying voter registration and voter lists as part of promoting research on various aspects of the electoral system in the country. This international conference is being held under that mandate.
Experts from various institutions, including Prof. Sarang Medhekar, Vice Chancellor of the Central University of Jharkhand, Prof. Ashok R. Patil, Vice Chancellor of NUSRL, Prof. Deepak Kumar Srivastava, Director of IIM Ranchi, and Dr. Father Robert Pradeep Kujur, Principal of St. Xavier’s College, will participate. Arvind Anand, Principal Secretary of the Election Commission of India, will also attend the conference.
