New York, September 23 (Daily Kiran) : Indian Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in New York on Wednesday morning to discuss advancing the strategic partnership between the two nations.
Rubio shared on social media platform X, “It was great to meet with Indian Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar today in New York. We are working together to advance the U.S.-India strategic partnership and coordinate on key regional priorities and upcoming multilateral efforts.”
In his post, Dr. Jaishankar reiterated India’s interests and concerns regarding the Strategic Response Initiative Act (SRIA), which includes sanctions against Russia and Iran. He also addressed the situations in the Gulf and Ukraine during their discussion.
Dr. Jaishankar is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on Saturday, with the session starting at 3 PM local time (12:30 AM IST on Sunday). Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine.
The meeting with Rubio is part of a series of high-level discussions Dr. Jaishankar is holding with global leaders and top diplomats during the UN General Assembly’s high-level week.
Despite a U.S. law imposing a 100 percent tariff on Russian oil buyers creating friction in U.S.-India relations, it has yet to be enforced. Additionally, a final decision on a trade agreement between the two countries remains pending, although cooperation continues in other areas.
The U.S. is a member of the Quad alongside India, Japan, and Australia, collaborating on security issues in the Indo-Pacific region. In May, during a Quad foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi, they reaffirmed their cooperation on maritime security, port infrastructure, and energy, seen as a response to concerns over China’s growing influence in the area.
