Lucknow, February 20: A heated debate erupted in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Thursday regarding electricity supply, privatization, and smart meters. During the zero hour, members of the Samajwadi Party (SP) criticized the government for inadequate electricity supply, rising rates, and consumer exploitation under the guise of smart meters.
In response, Energy Minister A.K. Sharma dismissed all allegations as baseless, asserting that every consumer in the state receives uninterrupted and continuous electricity. SP member Ram Singh Patel warned that the current power cuts could worsen during the impending heatwave. He accused the government of lacking solid preparations for electricity supply and production, noting that complaints to the department’s helpline, 1912, remain unresolved.
Fahim Irfan raised concerns about consumer exploitation related to smart meters and alleged arbitrary increases in kilowatt usage. Pankaj Patel stated that consumers are frightened by rising rates, claiming the government is focused on increasing revenue rather than serving the public. The SP emphasized that electricity should not be considered a luxury but a basic necessity, demanding it be made affordable and accessible.
Minister A.K. Sharma contended that electricity is no longer a contentious issue in the state. He claimed Uttar Pradesh is now the leading state in electricity production, distribution, and supply. According to him, domestic electricity rates are lower than in other states, and Uttar Pradesh is the first state to provide free electricity to farmers.
Regarding privatization, he clarified that no final decision has been made yet, and any future decisions will prioritize state interests. He also accused the previous SP government of inviting the private sector to set up power plants in 2006. Earlier, during question hour, SP members walked out of the assembly in dissatisfaction with the government’s responses on agricultural issues.
Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi assured that farmers face no difficulties, with ample fertilizer availability and benefits from the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme. He added that organic farming is also being promoted in the state.
During a question from SP member Dr. Ragini, Minister Dinesh Pratap Singh addressed the assembly, highlighting departmental achievements alongside development work in the assembly speaker’s constituency. In response, Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana remarked that ministers should focus on their work without needing to mention their names or constituencies. The assembly session continued amid sharp exchanges between the ruling party and the opposition on issues related to electricity and agriculture.
