New Delhi, 3 January: Passengers faced chaos at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) on Saturday as an Indigo flight to Purnia was delayed, leading to protests. Travellers expressed frustration, noting that the airline had service issues the previous day as well.
According to passengers, Indigo flight 6E 9076, scheduled from Delhi to Purnia, was cancelled on Friday and delayed again on Saturday. This forced many to rebook their tickets.
The repeated disruptions caused a commotion at the boarding counters, with passengers openly protesting the delay. Several passengers mentioned that the flight was cancelled on Friday, forcing them to change their travel plans.
Passengers claimed that on Saturday, the airline cited bad weather as the reason for the delay. Some also alleged that airline staff later informed them that no pilot was available to operate the flight.
Earlier in the day, Indigo had issued an advisory warning passengers of possible delays and cancellations across multiple airports due to low visibility and fog.
This incident comes just days after Indigo cancelled 118 flights on 29 December 2024 due to bad weather and operational issues. Six of these cancellations were due to operational problems, while the rest were weather-related across various airports.
Indigo has been facing significant operational challenges over the past month. In early December last year, the airline cancelled thousands of flights, including about 1,600 in a single day, following court orders enforcing stricter flight duty and rest regulations for pilots. These cancellations stranded millions of passengers nationwide.
Since foggy conditions began on 10 December, Indigo has continued to cancel a large number of flights. On 25 December alone, 67 flights were cancelled due to weather problems at different locations. On Saturday, 57 flights were cancelled from various airports for the same reason.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has officially declared the period from 10 December to 10 February as the fog season. During this time, flight operations are often affected by low visibility.
